Of course I consider what they have to say - unless they thought that the movie was actually created by aliens who wanted us to go to the Mothership to be "probed". In that case, I would reject them out of hand. That is a better analogy of how I feel when discussing religion. Our opinions are not merely quantitavely different, but qualitavely different - like talking to a schizophrenic.

What is the standard you use to reject certain things without discussion while accepting the possibility of others?

I guess my standard would involve lack of preposterousness. I can't wait for that musical!!

What standard do you hold for judging whether something is preposterous?

Stathei, you do realize with your current line of reasoning, Sasquatch (or anyone with enough patience) could ask questions about your standards forever, and even if you answered every question, there'd be no end to the chain of "by what standard do you just a *noun* to be *insert description here*?" questions, at least not until you flat-out admit that you'd consider tales of the supernatural inherently preposterous? And then would come the question of why, and since you're not willing (apparently) to engage in serious debate on such issues... well...

...With your current methods, you're probably just regarded by most on the forum as the neighborhood heckler, which doesn't help your cause at all if you really wish to "inject reality" into this forum.

I would actually rather see you taken seriously, y'know.

But we HAVE gotten off-topic, now, haven't we? We're supposed to be talking apologetics in education, but I don't think this thread has seen even two posts in reply to THAT topic. ^_^' Perhaps, if we're to continue this like of discussion at all, it should be in another thread?

DT and Sasq, I have tried to indicate the self evident nature of the Emporer's nakedness, and the absurdity of giving credence to the debate about his New Clothes by joining it. It would be stupid of me to then join the debate at your behest, wouldn't it?

As for being a neighborhood heckler, I have been much more than that in my past incarnation on this board. It was an exercise in futility.

You have indicated as such, but you have not told us why you believe it is self evident.

It's up to you. I really am interested in hearing why you believe this.

Well, that's the thing about the New Clothes argument, isn't it? Nobody in the discussion wants to tell the guy he's naked. If someone were to join the discussion with the intent of doing just that... and moreover, with the intent of telling the guy why he is, without question, naked, and why it's not just that people aren't worthy of seeing the clothes (or some such thing--it's been a LONG time since I've actually heard the full New Clothes story), then...

Well, maybe there'd be some progress made.

Alright, to let other threads stay true to their intended courses, I have built this little boxing ring so that we all can continue (and merge) our discussions with Stathei regarding his debate tactics. (The thread title was meant purely in good fun.) I'll be the official referee. The only rule is that you don't get too derisive, guys, and I'm sure you all know where to draw that line. (At least, I hope you do.)

hmmm.  An unexpected result.  DT, did you want to retain ability to moderate the boxing ring?  If so, I'll need to re-split off your post.

I don't care who mods it, so long as it's modded. And so long as it's modded correctly, in which case I'll be very loud about calling you on it if you screw up, Stath.  :-)

it doesn't look like he can mod it.  if you want it modded, I'll split it.  Just say the word.

This thread makes me feel oh so xmasy all over!!;)

Stem cell research will hasten our cure for cancer and, in fact, almost all other diseases from which we suffer. You can not reasonably deny that fact.

Are there reasons not to deny that fact?

(Not that I am against this cell stem research [cool)
