NEW FORUM RULES!

I'm going to ask that everyone STOP using the word 'hell.'

Seriously.

Just use the Greek words (Hades, Tarturus, Gehenna) or the Hebrew word (Sheol) that refer to the condition of the dead. Many modern translations render Hades, tarturus, and Gehenna all as 'hell' which is really stupid. Clearly different words were used for a reason.

Besides these words, there are verses describing afterlife concepts without using actual words. Be careful how you label them, too.

If you don't know what passage uses what, use crosswalk.com's interlinear or this link which seems solid:

http://what-the-hell-is-hell.com/HellStudy/HellCharts.htm

Yes, dear fellow Christians, you will have to abandon your cherished notions about 'hell' but you will be rewarded with a deeper understanding when you begin to see the different uses of the three Greek words. You will gain a much better understanding of the afterlife and we can stop having muddled conversations.

Think about it folks. All these nonChristians listening to us talk about 'hell' when we aren't even accurately discussing it ourselves.

I have other words that are woefully ill defined or poorly translated as well, but I'll wait for my boiling point to be reached on those.

Please. Its NOW A FORUM RULE:

THOU SHALT NOT USE THE WORD 'HELL.'

Insist that everyone here uses the correct Greek word in their arguments about whatever aspect of the afterlife under discussion.

Thank you.

Tell me about it. Like, the other day, when somebody referred to me as pulchritudinous.

I told them to go to he....I mean I told them to go to Sheol.

In answer to your question:  We are all muchos sinners, so that is not the distinguishing factor.

John 3:1-21

Matthew 7

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock:

Matthew 22

37 And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the great and first commandment.
39 And a second like unto it is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
40 On these two commandments the whole law hangeth, and the prophets.

Oh for pete sake. What is wrong with hel.. The fact is that place exists. So to try and please every one by not saying it is sisieness. The bible says if you sin and don't repent thats where you go. When we dont own up to that it makes the church look like wimps If you are using it in a mean way yeah don't, but if you are stating the facts some times it needs to be said. What has happened to us. Will some christians please stand up!

It depends on whether the individual was forgiven of his sins or not.

Are there parts of the Bible and/or Christian history that are too vulgar to be discussed and debated?  I would urge you to reconsider and withdraw your prohibition.

I believe that the concept of Hell that has been promulgated by Christian authorities and believed by most Christians for the last 1,700 years is erroneous.  The best way to deal with it is to talk about it.  It makes no sense to try and talk about it without mentioning it, or mentioning it using terms few are familiar with.  The old example of having an elephant in the room which everyone refuses to mention comes to mind.

The Bible is mostly a collection of experiences and stories of people about God.  It does not bother to clearly define its own terminology.  This is not surprising; we seldom define our words when we describe our own experiences in everyday life.  (It would be exhausting, boring and time-consuming to do so.) And each of us interprets and uses words in our own way, dictionary meanings not withstanding.  Think about it long enough, and I am sure every reader can remember a personal experience where a misunderstanding occurred because the participants reacted very differently to a word choice someone made.

Theologians have stepped in and made up definitions and a theology based on their interpretations of the words.   I have heard endless and fruitless arguments about the true meaning of words as used in the Bible and don

Dave --

I think you've missed the point.  SJ's point is that the English word "hell" in some translations is used to cover a variety of different concepts represented by different words in the original languages.  SJ is not prohibiting discussion of the concept of "hell" but is asking for specificity as to which of the concepts sometimes associated with that word is actaully being talked about.

but what if somebody's not talking about these things? for example, "sheol" has nothing to do with the christian hell, and the others probably mean other things also. (although the word "gehenna" sounds a lot like the hebrew word for hell. is that where the greeks got it from?)
